Confessions Of An Author

I’m not a big reader…there…I’ve said it! It’s not that I don’t enjoy reading and I definitely love the concept of “curling up with a good book” (insert fireplace, cozy throw and glass of red wine), getting lost in the plot, being transported to new locations, but…

I am quite possibly the slowest reader on the planet. There is no skimming, no skipping chapters, just word for word, sentence by sentence, paragraph by paragraph. Sometimes rereading the same passage over and over. Perhaps this attention to detail and need for understanding is what makes me good at proofreading and editing.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I do read both for the betterment of my brain as well as enjoyment. Historical fiction is my favorite genre. However, when a book ‘hooks’ me, I’m all in sometimes until the wee hours of the morning. Personally, I don’t function well on lack of sleep, so this presents a dilemma for me.

All this aside, I am a HUGE proponent of reading and you will never hear me say otherwise. Especially when it comes to children. Read to them, with them and around them. Make up stories, take them to the library, books on tape, puppet shows, have siblings read to each other or have kiddos read to their pets…whatever works. There is really no wrong way to incorporate reading into your child’s routine -more what works best for your family and your child.

Reading creates a bond and provides for a moment of stillness. It opens up the imagination and creativity. Some of my favorite memories are the bedtime stories my dad would tell or the books my mom would read on car trips. I’m a firm believer that these moments helped to bolster my creative writing and love for storytelling.

My all time favorite is the Harry Potter series, both from a pure enjoyment factor to my awe of JK Rowling’s writing ability.

I would really love to hear what your thoughts and any special books that have left their mark. Let me know in the comments below!
